The following is my idea of some of the pet products you need when you bring home a new bundle of joy!  (Four-legged and furry)

For a new kitten or a cat (adopting an older cat can save a precious life):

  • Kitten Food or Adult/Senior cat food (Try Holistic Artemis Pet Food)
  • Ceramic food bowls (Better than plastic for me, also small and flat is best with room for my whiskers)
  • Ceramic water bowl (Unless you'll consider getting me my own pet fountain, which I would really love)
  • Cat treats
  • Litter box (Please don't get me a small one, even if I'm small, because I will outgrow it very quickly. I like lots of room. Some like hooded boxes, but you must keep them spotlessly clean so there is no odor problem). I would recommend at least one on each level of your house, and also one per cat, plus one extra for good measure.
  • Kitty Litter  (I like clumping, unscented litter best.  I've tried others over the years, but generally come back to Everclean)
  • Kitty Litter Scoop (My mom likes the metal ones best, as the plastic ones can break sometimes, unless they are well-made, such as the ones offered in our store)
  • Carpet stain and odor remover (Nature's Miracle Just for Cats generally works best)
  • Paper Towels (To help clean up my mess)
  • Small bags - Paper or sandwich bags (To dispose of kitty litter and uneaten food)
  • ID Tag - (Please put my name and your name, as well as phone number on it)
  • Collar (Breakaway safety collar only, in case I get caught on something)
  • Brush and comb (Soft bristles or small wire brush, please.)
  • De-shedding tool, especially for a long-haired baby.
  • Nail trimmer (But start early, so I get use to it.)
  • Pet Wipes or wash cloths, so I don't have to take a full bath. I have heard that some cats will take baths without a fight, but I'm not one of them.
  • Hairball medication to keep my digestive tract clear.  (I generally like the malt flavor the best.)
  • Pet Carrier (Large enough so I can stand up and turn around in.  Also, remember I will be growing, so don't get one too small)
  • Fleece pad/cushion for pet carrier.  (I want something to keep me comfortable and warm - sprinkle with catnip later.)
  • Scratching posts and/or corrugated cardboard scratching boxes (depends on vertical or horizontal scratching preferences)
  • Window perch (So I can see the world outside.  Be sure to keep the window screens closed, however)
  • Cat perch (I really like 5' to 6' tall, which has several levels available, and some include a small house for naps)
  • Bed/sleeping pad (Sheepskin-like fleece is nice, but again, don't make it too small.  I also like the self-warming thermal pads, which keep me even more cozy)
  • Toys (Toys, toys, everywhere, please.  Furry mice, balls, catnip pillows, FroliCat Bolt, and other small toys)
  • Catnip (but I probably won't react to it until I'm about six months old.  Little kittens don't really know what the thrill is, but as soon as they are older, they will most likely really love it.
  • Playhouses (lots of fun, if you have the room.  I can hide, nap, and play all in one place)
  • Empty cardboard boxes (Simple fun, but great to jump in and out of)
  • Lint roller/remover to clean up any cat hair that I might leave around on your clothes, furniture, etc. (I can't help it, I shed.)
  • Kitten/cat care book (To answer any questions you might have about my development)
  • Be sure to line-up a very nice and caring vet for me.  There will be a few initial vet visits required to make sure I'm doing fine.
  • I don't think that you should go outside, but if you do, make sure that you have a flea/tick preventative.
  • Please have me spayed/neutered when I'm old enough, so I don't increase pet over-population. The younger I am, the quicker I will recover.
  • Please don't have me declawed.  It is a very painful operation, and every other country (besides the U. S.) thinks this is an inhumane way to try and control scratching.  Give me other scratching options, and I will do fine.
  • LOTS OF LOVE, ATTENTION, PRAISE, AND PAMPERING!!!!!!!!.

For a new puppy or dog:
  • Puppy or adult dog food
  • Ceramic food bowl
  • Ceramic water bowl, unless you get a pet fountain, which will keep the water fresher longer and also filters out bad tastes
  • Training treats to help me learn and keep me happy (small bites are good for training)
  • Dental treats to help keep my breath and teeth clean and fresh
  • Chewy treats (Pig ears, Pupperoni, Snausages, etc. are yummy)
  • Nail trimmer (start early)
  • Shampoo (no tears formula, please, such as Fluffy Puppy)
  • Dog wash hose for sink or tub.
  • Collar and leash for our outdoor outings.
  • Pooper scooper and/or waste bags for our outside walks.
  • "Wee Wee" pads during the house-training period
  • Paper towels (In case I make a mistake, which is very likely at the beginning, but please don't get mad, it is a learning experience)
  • Carpet stain and odor remover (Nature's Miracle seems to work best)
  • ID tags
  • Brush and combs (including a flea comb)
  • Pet carrier (same reason as for cats) and carrier pad/cushion
  • Bed/sleeping pad
  • Toys (both squeaky toys and chewing toys, especially during teething period.  If I'm real little, some plush toys have a heartbeat inside, which reminds me of being with my dog mom and provides me with some comfort)
  • Puppy/dog care book
  • Puppy class will help me learn the rules for being a wonderful pet, and will give us some quality time together.
  • Nice vet (again, same reason as for cats)
  • Pet gate, if you want to keep me in a certain part of the house, although I would rather be with you.
  • Please be sure to have me spayed/neutered when I'm old enough, so that I don't increase pet over-population.
  • LOTS OF LOVE, ATTENTION, PRAISE, PAMPERING and POSITIVE DISCIPLINE!!!
  • I enjoy watching Cesar Millan (the Dog Whisperer) on National Geographic Channel, I think he really understands dogs and their "pack leaders". You can get one of his numerous items or books at the links below.
  • We also watch "Rescue Ink" on the National Geographic Channel, following the Dog Whisperer on Friday nights.  These guys mean business, and are looking out for the animals.  Way to go, guys.
